Membership information

Bedford Speakers provide a relaxed atmosphere of professional camaraderie that makes it a unique learning environment dedicated to each member’s personal development needs.

We help our members achieve their full potential by giving them the opportunity to participate in the club meetings and making help and assistance available at any time via our mentoring program, should the member so wish.

As a Toastmaster, you will learn how to:

  • Overcome the initial nervousness everyone feels when called to speak before an audience.
  • Organise and present your ideas logically and convincingly.
  • Improve your ability to listen to other people's ideas and evaluate them.
  • Develop self-confidence that will radiate in every situation involving other people.

What you get

When you first join the club you will receive a membership pack containing the Competent Communication and Competent Leadership manuals, as well as advice on developing your speaking voice and body language. Other benefits of membership include:

  • Membership of Toastmasters International and the opportunity to visit any of the 180 clubs in the UK and Ireland
  • A monthly copy of Toastmaster magazine, with tips, information, ideas and news

Testimonials

See what some of our members are saying about Bedford Speakers and Leaders:

For me the Toastmaster experience is invaluable. Firstly, it gives me the opportunity to practise speaking and experiment with new ideas in a relaxed and welcoming environment. Secondly, it gives me the chance to learn so much from others, whatever their level of expertise. And thirdly, it means I spend time with real people who enjoy life. What better way to share this journey?

I thought a public speaking club had nothing to offer an introverted computer geek. I was completely wrong! The confidence I've gained through being a member of Toastmasters has helped me in almost everything I do. I'm not afraid to speak up, whether at work or in social activities, and with my new skills I can help others achieve their own goals. And best of all, I’ve had the chance to meet some fantastic people and make new friends.
Sue, Northampton

I went along to my first Toastmasters meeting totally unsure what to expect. I had a totally enjoyable evening and was made to feel very welcome. As I am semi-retired, I did not feel I would be motivated to make speeches or take on roles within the club – how wrong could I be – the positive, supportive attitude of members was so different to the critical, pushy, competitive environment I had experienced for most of my working life.

I have made many new friends and look forward to each meeting and my first experience of a Conference held in Ireland blew me away!! Speakers who had won at international level, judges, officials and long-standing members greeted me, were happy to chat and share their experiences. The culture of supporting people whilst gently encouraging growth and development is a rare thing to find and anyone who is looking to gain confidence in a working environment or just to enhance their social skills, should give serious consideration to coming along and joining us!
